Legendary Muscle Shoals guitarist Pete Carr dies

Legend who played on Rod’s albums

Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section guitarist Pete Carr, who played with everyone from Rod, Duane and Gregg Allman to Paul Simon and Bob Seger, died on June 27 in Florence, Alabama. He was 70 years old.

As the lead guitarist for the famed studio band, Pete contributed to hits including Rod’s huge hit ‘Tonight’s the Night’ after producer Tom Dowd called Pete to Los Angeles to play on Rod’s album, Pete’s guitar playing was a prominent part of the hit. He layered rhythm and lead guitars throughout the song. he also played on Rod’s album ‘Atlantic Crossing’ and ‘If Loving You is Wrong’.

Pete also played on records by Cat Stevens, Joan Baez, Donovan, Barbra Streisand, Joe Cocker, The Staples Singers, Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton, Paul Anka, Livingston Taylor, Kim Carnes, Johnny Rivers, Wendy Waldman, José Feliciano, Levon Helm, and Boz Scaggs.

Back in 2015 Pete joined SMILER in celebrating Rod’s 70th birthday telling us “I played guitar(s) one of Rod’s biggest hits, “Tonight’s the Night”.But my name got left off the album” .
