Probably the best set list in over 20 years.This was a proper Rod Stewart concert with the inclusion of HIS new songs from HiS new album.
The Killing of Georgie was included in the set ( the first time in over a decade) it was not only greatly welcomed and received but did leave you wondering why such a classic is almost always omitted (in favour of dross like Heartache etc).This along with “…..Only Joking…” (sadly not included tonight) is Rod putting two fingers up to “…..the cynics,the critics…..” with some of the finest lyrics ever written.
The inclusion of the acoustic set with a local string section was sensational allowing the audience to really listen to the music and highlighting the musical mastery of the band,in particularly J’anna Jacoby.”Brighton Beach” was outstanding and felt like it was a Rod song from long ago performed on many an occasion….I found it hard to listen to without a tear in my eye.
Whilst it was a great set with Rod sounding great and clearly enjoying himself I felt that he build up to the opening of the show was somewhat lacking….no “Flower of Scotland”,”Stripper” “Match of the Day” etc….it was curtain up and go. The band as normal were tight and slick (is this always a good thing?)The stage and images was in my opinion a little too Vegas(esque) although some emotional and sentimental ones also.
I don’t understand the need to include the “funny” YouTube videos ( 2 this time around).
I also thought that the sound at the start was a little poor and throughout I felt could have been louder.
All in all though 1hr45mins of a great Rod set …..you are all in for a treat in the coming weeks….see you there.
