Little Richard, one of the pioneers of the first wave of rock’n’roll, has died. He was 87.
Richard who’s real name was Richard Wayne Penniman influenced legions of performers whose fame would eventually outstrip his own. His son, Danny Penniman, confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, but said the cause of death was unknown.
Rod along with Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, James Brown, Otis Redding, and David Bowie all cited Little Richard as an influence
Rod’s family were great fans of the singer Al Jolson and would sing and play his hits.Rod collected his records,saw his films, and read books about him, and was influenced by his performing style and attitude towards his audience. But Rod said his introduction to rock and roll was hearing Little Richard’s 1956 hit “The Girl Can’t Help It”, and seeing Bill Haley & His Comets in concert.
Rod did a great cover of Richards ‘You’re My Girl (I Don’t Want To Discuss It)’ on his album ‘Gasoline Alley’ in 1970.
