GIVEN the near Biblical rains that swept Edinburgh for most of the day, it might have been appropriate had Rod Stewart started his two-night sell-out residency at Edinburgh Castle with his hit ‘Sailing’. He opted instead to sing The Stereophonics’ ‘Handbags and Gladrags’, aptly describing the crowd.

Tartan scarves, bleached blond hair and even three men in Elvis costumes added to the party atmosphere, with Rod hamming it up like an old pro.

At 57, he may not be quite as snake-hipped as he once was, but no matter what his current belle Penny Lancaster says, his ardour for putting on a performance hasn’t drooped.

This was a greatest hits package, and ‘You’re in My Heart’ turned into a mass bellow-along. Rod may be trading on past glories but he can still fetch a good price for them.
