After Rod’s comments about Rangers through the week the backlash came sparking a furious response with many Rangers fans giving Rod stick on The Scottish Daily Record Hotline, but like Liam Gallagher on his twitter account Rod wouldn’t let it drop and was back on the hotline to give a personal pop back
First a message for Hotline regular Jimmy Mac from Glasgow, who branded Rod an ‘embarrassment’ who is not even welcome at Celtic Park.
Rod replied: “Dear Jim from Glasgow, I stand by statement. If the shoe were on the other foot I would want Celtic to concede and show sporting integrity.
“And as for the small amount of Celtic fans that displayed the banner, they were shouted down by the majority.”
Next up Stan Campbell, Inverness who accused our man of having a ‘brass neck’.
Rod responded: “Dear Stan from Inverness, brass neck or not mate, I have sold 270 million albums so I must be doing something right.
“But you are most certainly entitled to your opinion.”
Now for Frank McFerran of Carrickfergus , who branded Rod an ‘old timer’ while insisting his own granddaughter knows more about football than the veteran singer.
Rod said: “Dear Frank from Carrickfergus, yes I am an old timer and you must care about what I say because you wrote about it in to the Hotline.
“And tell your’ granddaughter I played at a very high level of football with a team in the USA called the Exiles who reached the semi finals of the All American Amateur Cup.”
John Stewart from Newton Mearns also had a dig, mocking his claim that Celtic have been the best team in the country this season – and pointing to the last two Old Firm derbies before the winter break.
Rod responded: “Rangers were superb in both of those games but trophies are won by consistency and winning two games does not win anything mate. Being 13 points clear does.”
And Sir Rod signed off with an invitation to all four.
He said: “My friends I mean no harm by my comments, I love the game as much as you. I welcome a strong Rangers and I wish you well in the Europa League. Maybe one day we can all meet up and talk football over a pint the next time I’m up for a game? This fine newspaper can arrange it. Sir Rod Stewart CBE.”
Now that’s something Liam never does!
