For me, 1980s FOOLISH BEHAVIOUR was the first Rod Stewart album that I was absolutely mad about and would constantly play after school for the better part of early ’82 (I bought it late on 8-track). Back then it just sounded so fresh and very relatable…
With both lukewarm critical and commercial receptions, FOOLISH BEHAVIOUR in many ways was considered a wildly self-indulgent affair. Sure, it’s patchy in parts and lacking cohesiveness, but nevertheless, Rod still came up with some genuine and entertaining material. “Passion”, “Gi’ Me Wings” and especially the masterfully explicit, “Oh God, I Wish I Was Home Tonight” are well above average songs that any artist would kill to have in their catalog. The albums biggest flaw is that it seems to be missing a sense of a solid and real confident direction. Why else would Rod have co-written the entire album with four or five members of his then backing band? He (over) produced the album under the pseudonym “Harry The Hook” (and the hooks are solid), with assistance from the Rod Stewart group and Jeremy Andrews Johns.
