After attending countless concerts since 1971 and my tenth one in twelve months, I knew exactly what to expect when I travelled from Newcastle to the SSE Hydro in Glasgow last night!!
Along with thousands of other fans including Celtic captain Scott Brown who was in the crowd, I could feel the usual pre concert excitement as Johnny Mac and The faithful took to the arena – a brilliant choice for an expectant and partisan crowd that never need too much of a warm up……
By the time the familiar bagpipes soared ‘Flower of Scotland’ we all roared our approval at the impending arrival of the man himself who soon bounded on stage in a tartan jacket and opened with ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’ which had everyone immediately on their feet.
What followed was his usual unmatchable masterclass of vocal supremacy, charisma, humour and stage presence (always a heady and irresistible mix to the young and older fans lucky enough to witness his unique talent up close).
All the old crowd pleasers were delivered with Sir Rod’s usual aplomb and panache…’Rhythm of My Heart’, ‘Forever Young’, ‘Georgie’ etc etc etc with at least four applauded costume changes – we all loved the silver number almost as much as Rod – that gave us all what we came for and more besides.
His rendition of ‘Rollin and Tumblin’ brought back memories of years ago – his voice even better now than when I first saw him perform it. It really is impossible to believe that he will be 75 in a couple of months.
His band need special recognition too – every single member was truly fantastic – the sax, drum and string solos were just incredible and acknowledged by everyone in attendance – especially the sax solo on Downtown Train.
Now, I’ve seen him sing Maggie more times than I’ve had hot dinners – but not like last night. This version was very slow to begin with and it really took my breath away.
The emotional and rousing Grace was fantastic as well as moving, Then there was the usual party atmosphere at the end of the set, which finished with one of my favourites ‘Stay with Me’ as the encore by which time everyone was rocking in the aisles and singing along with Sir Rod. Bit disappointed only the one song but it did not spoil the evening.
So did I get what I was expecting??
Ohhhhh yes!!
Does he wear it well??
Exceptionally so!!
Do I Think He’s Sexy??
You bet!!
Will I be back for more??
Can’t wait for the next one!!
