As the Rolling Stones rock through Chicago with their “On the Road” arenas/stadiums/clubs concert tour, S2 Art Gallery will invite fans to see the band in an entirely different way – with an exhibition of artwork by Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, opening September 13-14, 2002.
“Backstage Pass: The Art of Ronnie Wood” will feature limited-edition screenprints by Woody, who is a formally trained visual artist in addition to his musical talents. Throughout nearly 40 years in rock ‘n’ roll, Woody has continually worked at capturing images of his musical colleagues – not only only Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and friends (including self-portraits), but other greats such as Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and Keith Moon. Whether in performance, backstage, in rehearsal or at home, Wood’s subjects come to life with an intimacy that could only be accessible to one of their own.
A special press preview of “Backstage Pass: The Art of Ronnie Wood” will be held at the gallery on Thursday, September 12, from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by opening receptions on Friday, September 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, September 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. S2 Art Gallery is located at 300 W. Superior Street in the heart of Chicago’s River North gallery district. The exhibition will run through Sunday, October 7.
The multi-talented Wood, 55, was born in Middlesex, England, and attended the Ealing College of Art in London. The college was a hub for other young artist-rockers of the time including Pete Townsend and Ray Davies, and Wood himself was concurrently playing in a band called The Thunderbirds. Working his first stint as a professional artist, the young Wood found himself earning four pounds a week. “I thought, ‘This isn’t very good, I can earn a fiver playing with my band,'” he wrote in a 1998 collection of his artwork titled Wood on Canvas: Every Picture Tells a Story. And thus music became his primary focus, eventually bringing him to work with powerhouses The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces, and since 1975, the Rolling Stones. But his passion for art was with him every step of the way, resulting in a body of work full of deft glimpses at some of the most intriguing talents in rock history.
