Rod’s ‘lost’ Top Of The Pops performance has been found

A real historical find

A music fan’s 1970’s recordings of Top Of The Pops performances, previously feared to be lost for good, sold at auction this week.

The footage – which features Rod’s missing Maggie May performance when he was backed by The faces who all swapped instruments plus other performances from artists such as Sir Elton John, Status Quo and Elvis Presley – had previously been thought lost after the BBC removed parts of its archive by recording over its old film to save money.

However, amazingly thanks to a Welsh music fan who had used a Sony CV-2000 (one of the first video tape recorders for home use) to record the performances from his TV when they first aired, the historical performances have not been lost forever.

Unfortunately the recordings that sold for £4,000, were sold without copyright, meaning the buyer is not legally allowed to reproduce or distribute them.
