There was much excitement last Saturday morning when over-night the legendary wiped Top Of The Pops performance of Rod’s Maggie May, where the Faces all swapped instruments, appeared on the video web site Vimeo.
Posted by someone called Johnny Monroe the appearance of this much sought after performance remains a mystery. Just hours after it appeared it was muted and then disappeared completely. If its removal was intended to deny fans the chance to see this fantastic piece of musical history then it failed, as by the time it was removed countless fans had downloaded the video which was then widely shared.
The clip, along with another performance of Maggie May, was discovered in 2019 in a haul of early domestic video tapes that featured countless wiped Top Of The Pops performances. It was originally broadcast on 30 September 1971. The recovered version is the repeat broadcast of 28 October 1971 from an episode hosted by Ed Stewart. The fact that it exists at all is something of a miracle. Let’s hope the BBC see fit to broadcast it at some later date.
