Kia Meeting

On September 9th Rod played the 2022 Kia Meeting at The Wynn Las Vegas

Photo James Seale

After the show Kristin Springfield Seale who attended with her husband James met Rod and said ‘Had the best time in Vegas for James Kia Meeting. We got to meet Rod Stewart, Scott Disick and Kimberly Stewart at a club. Pretty cool!’ Kristin gave us our fantastic star studded main photo and told SMILER this week ‘We actually met Rod at Dehlialhs in the Wynn after the show. He was sitting at the table behind us and my friend Julie was dancing. She is Brazilian and LOVES to dance! Rod was cheering her on. She tried to get on this platform and security pulled her down and Rod and Scott booed security and said let her dance 🤣 that is her in the picture with them. Then they all came over and greeted us on the way out. Rod grabbed my husband’s face between his hands and said so nice to meet you. It was so funny. My friend is writing a self help book and she told Scott and he said I need all the help I can get and gave her his assistants number to help get it published when she is finished. It was a crazy night’.

Daily Record Hotline

Photo SMILER

Rod called in to the Daily Record Hotline after reading Saturday’s contribution from Bristol caller Wullie Graham, who thinks Scottish football is sailing towards the European abyss after a dreadful week for Scottish teams on the continent.

Rod said: “Dear Wully Graham from Bristol, I feel I must jump to the defence of Scottish teams in Europe.

“I’m sure you are aware that Scottish teams have punched above their weight for decades. Scotland’s football economy is slim to say the least. Let’s look at the squad values – Real Madrid’s ÂŁ328million against Celtic’s ÂŁ28million. Ajax’s team is worth ÂŁ102million compared to Rangers’ ÂŁ14million. This gulf in wealth obviously means that the elite of Europe can buy the best players and there lies the difference.

“In saying this, let’s not forget Rangers amazing run in the Europa League last season and Celtic’s first half display against Real Madrid, where Celtic had Real Madrid rattled in the first half and could have taken a 2-0 lead. Let’s also not forget that way back when all teams were playing on the same playing field, so to speak, Celtic won the European Cup, the first British club to do so, and with an all Scottish born team of players.

“So one could theorise that if the transfer market was governed and all clubs had access to all players maybe a different outcome would be seen nowadays. To be honest Wully, I can’t see any Scottish team winning the Champions League due to the level of competition and the extreme wealth required to be competitive.

“Scottish football’s level is the Europa League, so let’s get real and stop complaining and instead get behind the teams. Ok Wully you can sit down now.”

This weeks Rod Art

This week we feature an amazing watercolour painting by Tony Lampert from Margate, Kent who told SMILER this week “I’m a huge fan of Rod’s but have never got the chance to see him on stage. we started collecting Rod’s music with LP’s back in the Maggie May days. I saw The Small Faces but that was pre- Rod days of course”.

Penny to work as Special Constable at Queen’s funeral

Penny has revealed she will be working as a Special Constable at the Queen’s funeral on Monday 19th.

During an extended edition of Good Morning Britain on Monday Penny explained

“It was a great privilege to work at the Queen’s memorial service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Friday. I signed the oath of Office of Constable to Her Majesty the Queen just over a year ago, April last year, and just as the seamless tie between Her Majesty and King Charles III, my oath will now be with the King.”

Adding of her own role in the proceedings, she shared: “I have extreme pride to serve on the streets of London on Friday and I will be again on Wednesday when the Queen’s cortege and on Monday, which is a historic moment I’ll be very proud to be at.”

Speaking to Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard on Monday Penny also spoke of her love for the Royal Family, including King Charles III, who she worked alongside closely with The Prince’s Trust charity. And recalled dancing with the then Prince while Rod sang saying ‘It was his 60th birthday and he had asked Rod to perform and he asked if I would be the first on the dance floor because you can imagine people being nervous and not knowing the protocol, who should get up first.

‘So he asked in the drink reception if I would do the first dance, so it would get everyone up.

‘While Rod was performing I was on the dance floor with Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, William and Harry.

‘It was an incredible family event.’

When asked by host Susanna what song they had danced to, Penny confirmed it was Rod’s hit track Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?.

Penny was also called upon for police duties on Tuesday as Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin landed at RAF Northolt on its way to Buckingham Palace helping contain crowds who had gathered outside the RAF base to catch a glimpse of the Queen’s coffin.

And Finally ..

Don’t miss this months Record Collector magazine featuring another interview with Brian Auger..

A prominent figure on the 60s London scene, Brian Auger is one of the great missing links. A highly skilled musician, band leader and songwriter, he is, perhaps, best known for his hit version of Dylan’s This Wheel’s On Fire. But he was also an early pioneer of jazz-rock fusion, later hailed the ‘godfather of Acid Jazz’. Now 82, he is entertainingly forthright, with tales of Hendrix, Rod Stewart and the tower of pianos that threatened to put “a huge hole in rock’n’roll”. He speaks to Record Collector October 2022 issue.

See you next week.
