It felt like an away game with Rod

Newcastle Metro Arena 27 September review by Jonathon Horrox

My name is Jonathon Horrox, I am 8 years old and I live in Edinburgh. I became a Rod Stewart fan when I heard Dad [SMILER member Simon Horrox] playing Forever Young, made better when Rod shared a Christmas Song with my other favourite singer Cee Lo Green. Dad then bought me the Time album and I now know the words to every song on the album (which is more than Rod, it is “change my life around” not “turned my life around” when you sing “She Makes Me Happy”, although according to Dad this is quite a regular occurrence).

We travelled down Friday on the train and after getting to the hotel we walked to the concert in time for Moya. Rod then came on stage at 8:15pm and started with This Old Heart of Mine, which is one I don’t really know (remember I was born in 2004!). He then sung quite a few old songs, most of which I knew (especially Forever Young with his daughter) before getting on to the best ones from “Time”, the best of which was Can’t Stop Me Now. Then we got to sit down for a bit, which was actually good because we were on the 5th row from the front so I had to stand on my bag on my seat the entire time to see!

Finally Rod got on to some of his really famous songs (Maggie May, Sailing etc.), I didn’t get a ball (although my Dad has about 20, so I might just have have one of his!) but I did get 3 balloons. He did 2 encores (Dad said he would only do one) and he finished with Auld Lang Syne, which I also knew the words to perfectly because we have learnt it at school!

I thought the concert was really good, although I felt like I was at an away game at football because I had to stand the whole time (except the home team must have been kind to
us and given us 11000 standing tickets!). It was really loud, but with cotton wool in my ears it was no louder than when Aguero scored to win the League against QPR!

I am definitely going to go again but next time I will get to the front. I can’t go to Glasgow though because at the moment the top of the barriers are the same height as my nose, so next time Rod tours I should be big enough to stand.

Set List

This Old Heart Of Mine / You Wear It Well / Twisting the Night Away / Sweet Little Rock n Roller / Rhythm of My Heart / Just One More Day (by Ruby) / Forever Young (duet with Ruby)/ First Cut is the Deepest / I Don’t Wanna Talk About it / Have I told You Lately / Brighton Beach / Can’t Stop me Now / She Makes Me Happy / I’d rather go blind / Soul woman ( by the band) / You’re in my Heart/ Maggie May / Sailing / Hot Legs / Baby Jane / Da You Think Im Sexy / Auld Land Syne

I am now on the train back to Edinburgh after a great night, and tomorrow I play football against Leith Athletic Under 9’s. If Rod’s Dad was still alive he would probably me managing them and I think they wish he was because I think we will beat them
