To those who complain that Rod Stewart doesn’t try anymore, I can only say: Well, duh.

Let’s face it: Stewart really hasn’t taken music seriously since the Carter administration. But that’s the whole point of Rod Stewart — he doesn’t try. And if you told him that, he would just laugh, wink, open another bottle of champagne and head to the Riviera in his Lear Jet with a supermodel on each arm. Because that’s his life. Basically, he’s the Dean Martin of his generation, but with better hair. And grumbling because he isn’t as dour as Eddie Vedder is like whining over the fact that Dylan still doesn’t enunciate properly after all these decades. It gets you nowhere. Yeah, Rod used to rock with Jeff Beck and The Faces. Sure, Ooh La La, Pool Hall Richard and Every Picture Tells a Story were great. Granted, the dude’s been resting on his laurels longer than he’s had laurels. You’re right. Now get over it, lighten up, let Rod be Rod and enjoy the show.

“Tonight you’re going to get what you want,” Stewart promised near the beginning of the show. And he was true to his word,
