Ready for Rod

Malmö Arena Malmö 26th May 2016 Review By Review By Anna Niklasson and Jeanette Heimer

The Malmö party got off to a good start as the curtain rose to the sound of the girls singing, Rod appeared on stage wearing a Silver jacket. Shouts of excitement from the audience as they clapped their hands and Rod was given a bunch of Red roses which he heartily thanked them for and said he would put them in his hotel room.

The set-list began with “We’re having a party”. The show is on and we love it from the start. The next song brought back sweet memories of our youth “Young Turks” is still a real good song. “Tonight’s the Night” was as always a lovely song closely followed by “Rhythm of My Heart” with battle scenes on the screen behind him and Rod marching about the stage as he sings.

Next up, came “Can’t Stop Me Now” with Rod speaking warmly of his beloved father, and of his ‘Tartan Pride’. The girls have changed into kilts and just like the song they “Wear it Well”. The violins were incredible! Then Rod sits at the edge of the stage, singing “Downtown Train” with so much sensitivity. Jimmy “The Saxman” Roberts plays solo, giving Rod a break.

Then Rod is back and shows us that “Love Is” really is fantastic. Now it’s David Palmers’ turn to show off a little as the girls get to do a river-dance. “Forever Young” has a backdrop of his wonderful family as well as Rods love of the Celtic football team.Footballs get kicked out into the audience as Rod sings the good old Faces song “Stay with Me”. After a short break Rod is back on stage wearing a leopard print jacket singing his heart out with “Every beat of My Heart”. Then he was “Rollin and Tumblin” with his own interpretation of the Muddy Waters hit.

The must have “Maggie May” is easy for him to sing and so very easy to enjoy. We especially like the end as he sings “Get back home Maggie”. Rod beams that amazing smile as he tells everyone to sit on their ‘very expensive seats’ and launches into “First Cut is the Deepest”, the Harp solo in this song was beautiful.Rod asks the audience to sing along as he’s singing “I don’t want to talk about it” with a warm passion that reaches right into your heart. Just before he takes a break Rod gives us more Faces candy with an acoustic “Ooh La La”, but he can hardly sit still.

The girls give us an amazing rendition of the soulful “Young Heart Run Free” and then the man is back with his cover of Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind”. Singing from the bottom of his heart with his eyes closed, Rod is now dressed all in white even down to his shoes apart from some happy RED shoelaces.

We then get the 80’s disco sound of “Baby Jane” and more football kicking to the good old hit “Hot Legs”. “Sailing” gave us goose-bumps tonight. His voice was excellent. The last song of the night for Rod and the band was “Do You Think I’m Sexy”…well of course we do. The bitter end for us as the show was coming to a close with Cowboy Hats, balloons and great solos from Jimmy and the wonderful Conrad.

Even though we’re Swedes ourselves, we must admit that the Swedish audience is a bit stiff compared to other concerts we’ve been to, for example in Great Britain…But, all in all we really enjoyed the Concert at Malmö Arena and had a RODtastic evening that we’ll never forget
