posted by Mike Walton

The best and bravest of our forces personnel were recognised yesterday at The Sun’s Military Awards.

Affectionately referred to as The Millies, the ceremony took place at London's Guildhall and Rod and Penny were in attendance

The full list of winners will be revealed on Forces TV on Sunday at 7pm

One Army hero won the hearts of the audience by proposing to his girlfriend. Lance Corporal Gary Crane, popped the question to Kristine Gaffney, a week after asking her parents for permission.

As Rod Stewart told the thrilled audience what was going on, Lance Corporal Crane got down on one knee to rapturous applause before announcing: “She said ‘Yes’!”

He later told The Sun: “I was so nervous. It had been on my mind all day. I wanted to get it all done and dusted.”

The couple, of Calne, Wilts, were also presented with champagne and flowers on stage by Rod and Penny.

Sailors from HMS Bulwark received the Best Unit Award for rescuing nearly 5,000 desperate migrants from the Med. Captain Nick Cooke-Priest said it was “deeply humbling” to be honoured Rod broke out into his hit Sailing after giving the crew their gong.

Penny who was a judge for the BAE Systems-sponsored Millies, said: “Rod and I go to a lot of very glamorous events and awards but this is the most important award show for us.”

Watch The Millies this Sunday on Forces TV at 7pm on Sky 264, Virgin 277, Freesat 652 and streamed live online at
