We Are Sailing...

The Shantymen and the children from Sheringham Primary School record new version of Rod's classic.

Norfolk band The Sheringham Shantymen have recorded a version of Rod's hit single Sailing for their new album with a little help from a local school Choir.

Shantymen musical director Brian Farrow asked the children of Sheringham Primary School’s junior choir to sing on the recording and was very pleased with the results saying he was “incredibly impressed” with the youngsters’ efforts

Brian told SMILER how the recording came about

'Last year was the 150th anniversary of the Sheringham RNLI of which I am the Lifeboat Operations Manager.

We planned a whole town celebration and it was suggested that the primary school choir might like to sing along with The Shantymen as one of the events on the day – which we did.

So we put it all together and we taught the children some shanty songs as well as ‘Sailing’. In truth the Sailing song went down so well with us all so we decided to offer the school choir the opportunity to cut a track for a CD with The Shantymen. That’s it in a nutshell'.

Lets hope now the children have checked out Rod's Sailing they will dig further into his back catalogue and discover the many gems that lie therein.

Asked when we might get to here the finished song Brian told us 'We spent an hour or so yesterday [Thursday] recording the song with the children which we hope to put on our next CD. We do not yet have enough songs for the CD yet but we have banked this track and it will be used after it has been re-mastered!.
