Out Of Order 30th Anniversary

Brand new blog in SMILER Retro By Pat Brett

posted by Mike Walton

30 years ago, this month, Rolling Stone announced that Rod was to release the cheekily titled Pardon My Past late Spring.…and after name changes to Night Nurse and Coming up for Air, we finally got Out of Order in early Summer. It was worth the wait. Three decades later it still sounds fresh and energetic.

Built on the foundation of Rod’s unexpected new writing relationship with Andy Taylor, OOO rocked better than its eighties predecessors whilst retaining hummable hooks and re-introducing the mandolin and fiddle for the first time in years. All the ingredients were there…even the cover was a good one. The big eighties hair was in full bloom but t-shirt and torn jeans were in keeping with the music. Not a red leather suit or straw hat in sight.
