Tonight's the Night - The Musical

Liverpool Review by Garry Pease

posted by Mike Walton

Anyone going to see The Musical, Tonight's the Night ?
If you are, you are really in for a treat ! I didn't manage to get to see the show the first time it was doing the rounds, so I didn't want to miss out this time, if only to see if it was as good as the the reviews I'd read.
Not being a theatre goer myself apart from the odd panto when the kids were little, I didn't quite know what to expect, so with some trepidation I waited for the show to start.

As the show started I was a little surprised to see it set in the USA, with American accents etc. but soon got used to it as the show unfolds. Please don't expect to see a 'Rod' soundalike/lookalike, because that's not what the story needed, but the lead part of 'Stuart' played by the very talented Ben Heathcote is spot on !

I won't spoil it for you by telling you the plot ( if you haven't already seen it ! ) just go and see it for yourself !

Stand-out cast members for me were Jenna Lee James who plays Stuarts love interest Mary, and Jade Ewen ( Sugerbabes ) who plays her friend Dee Dee. They are both absolutely sensational singers ! Both girls gave stunning renditions of 'Reason to Believe' and 'I Don't Want To Talk About It' respectively. Both songs brought my missus to tear's !
Also one of the stand-out characters for me was 'Stoner' , played by the brilliant Michael Mckell ( Miss Marple, Casualty, Emmerdale, The Bill and many others ! ) who is a mix of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood !

All in all, the show is very funny, but also has some very touching moments, interspersed by some fantastic Rod songs, which work very well within the story.

Go see and judge for yourself, as I think it appeals to everyone, and seeing the audience, it also appeals to all ages !
