JOHN
GRAY dutifully covers the down side, noting the criticisms and
slaggings Rod has occasionally endured over the years in this
comprehensive rock diary. We are reminded of Rod's key relationships,
from Britt to Alana, from Jeff Beck to the Faces. We hear of
his escapades, marriages, bust ups and the stuff of tabloid
press headlines. But Rod comes smiling through, having made
more good records than he ever got bad reviews. What emerges
through the bare facts and the quotes is a portrait of a man
who combines being a hedonist with being a pragmatist. He wants
to enjoy himself and is willing to work hard, but often makes
personal decisions in a way that can hurt others. But the charm
and the talent work for him every time.
I note the inclusion of my own critical review of the Jeff Beck
Group's debut gig in 1967, when Jeff walked off stage and the
power failed. But Rod carried on singing... I always said he'd
go far!
