PERHAPS WORD got round the book industry that should anyone dare to write a book about Rod Stewart, they faced the wrath of management, as this followed a lengthy five year gap since Ray Colemans' 'The Biography'.
This is a lavish affair containing fine photographs, even if one of the most interesting is somewhat misleading. The photograph of Rod with Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions is clearly false and it is quite obvious that Rod has been superimposed onto the photograph. The book also contains several annoying errors, the first in the opening sentence, where it announces the Faces played at the Oval on 18 September 1972! As a little research would have revealed, it was actually 1971. This mistake could be forgiven had the author not gone on to claim that 'You Wear It Well' had been No. 1 the week before the gig!
However, the book looks at things from a refreshingly different angle and does not claim to be a straight forward biography. It documents Rod's fashion sense, the photograph captions are excellent and it gives long overdue credit to recent triumphs such as 'A Spanner In The Works'. So all in all, it's well worth the price.
