SMILER is very proud to post the news that this months Classic rock Magazine [131] is a special issue dedicated to the finest vocalists in rock....and Rod has stormed in at number 5. The poll was taken from votes cast by readers, rock critics and some of the mentioned vocalists. Top 10 vocalists are : 1 - Freddie Mercury. 2 - Paul Rodgers. 3 - Robert Plant. 4 - Steve Marriot. 5 - ROD STEWART. 6 - Ian Gillian. 7 - Ronnie James Dio. 8 - Sammy Hagar. 9 - Steve Perry (Journey) 10 - Janis Joplin. The article about Rod says :
5 - ROD STEWART. "Bar none the best singer I've heard in Rock n roll. He's also the greatest white soul singer" - Elton John. "Is this a white guy? You are kidding me !" was Chuck Berry initial response on hearing Rod Stewarts explosive rendition of his 'Sweet Little Rock n Roller'. It's the extraordinary tone of Stewarts voice that first captures the attention: a characteristic sawdust rasp, totally unmistakable, propelled by a fearsome set of lungs that refuse to recognise their limitations. While its the exquisitely ragged timbre of Rods vocals that grab the headlines it's his phrasing - as smooth as Sam Cooke's cravat - that's established him as one of the finest interpreters of a song lyric in Rock history. From Truth blues wailing, through Faces machismo to solo crooning, there'll never be another Rod. * Greatest vocal - Pool Hall Richard by the Faces (1973 single). Rod barrels along full tilt, cackles, whoops and even breaks the odd bottle.
Well done to Classic Rock the world's most credible Rock magazine for at last giving Rod the recognition for his talent that lesser music press have failed to do in the past The issue also carries a 7 out of 10 star favourable review of the new 'Unplugged and seated' special release.
