Brand new blog by Dan Perreira in SMILER Retro

CAMOUFLAGE / PLEASE TAKE NOTE: * UPGRADE EDITION *

posted by Mike Walton

A brand new thought provoking blog by Dan Perreira is now up in SMILER Retro..A brand new look at one of Rod's most forgettable efforts

It's fair to say that most Rod devotees weren't very enthusiastic with 1984's CAMOUFLAGE album - or at least somewhat disappointed with the overly slick new direction Rod was then taking with his music. It just didn't seem like a "legitimate" Stewart release at the time (Rod the artist was a little lost on here...). I must confess from the first time I put the needle to it, I played it pretty much non-stop for the rest of the year - until the next Rod album came out (hey, I was young...)! The critics gave CAMOUFLAGE a big thumbs down across the board, with Rolling Stone famously giving it a single star rating! The album without a doubt was Rod's attempt to win over music buyers in the US with a more current and trendy sound... after the disappointing sales of BODY WISHES, CAMOUFLAGE really does come off as nothing more than a "cash in job" (it also has the sorry feel of a bad soap opera). Rod mistakenly enlisted pop-producer Michael Omartian to over see the CAMOUFLAGE project who then goes on to manipulate the proceedings... Rod had been impressed with his production work on Donna Summer's hit single "She Works Hard For The Money"?! (good producer, bad idea...).
